Statement Against Anti-Black Racism

administrator Campus Community

A Message to Our Campus Community

The following statement was released by the University Students’ Council executive on Sunday, May 31st:

Ethnocultural Support Services and the University Students’ Council is angered by the continued acts of racism and violence perpetrated against Black communities, in our country and across our borders. We will not tolerate racism and injustice in our community. Together, we stand in solidarity with Black students, professors, and administrators who are facing anti-black racism and discrimination. We recognize that the prejudice of these events are not new and require continued, collective social action to combat.

We represent individuals of all backgrounds and we are committed to upholding our responsibility to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcomed on our campus. This is not the time for performative allyship and activism. We encourage students, regardless of their backgrounds, to educate themselves and engage in important discourse about racism and injustice – this is a community-wide issue and it must be treated as such.

We are committed to hearing the concerns of Black students and engaging with their perspectives. These concerns will be brought to university administration and policymakers to address the systemic issues within our community and our broader society. If you wish to share your thoughts or concerns, please email Matt Reesor at president@westernusc.ca.

We recognize that this is a traumatizing time for many of our students. We encourage students to seek support by contacting the Student Support and Case Management Office at sscm@uwo.ca or access any of the resources listed below.
