USC Statement on Kamloops Residential School

administrator Campus Community, Press Release

May 31, 2021

The USC joins in the collective mourning of 215 Indigenous children who lost their lives after enduring forced separation from their families and placed in the Indian Residential School in Kamloops, BC. Our thoughts are with their relatives, Indigenous communities and residential school survivors during this difficult time.

The legacies of residential schools and the ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island are prevalent today and continue to impart living trauma for residential school survivors alongside intergenerational and community trauma.

We know this situation is triggering for many members of our campus community – please know, we are here for you. If you are struggling, reach out for support. The Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available 24/7 to residential school survivors and others who are affected: 1-866- 925-4419
